Pottery Care & Use Information
- Handmade pottery may show natural variations in color, texture, and shape—this is part of its unique character.
- Discontinue use if cracks develop, especially for food or liquid.
Paint Your Own Earthenware
Paint your own pottery is made from earthenware clay and is food safe when used as intended.
- Food safe for serving and eating
- Not microwave safe
- Not dishwasher safe
- Hand wash only with mild soap
- Avoid soaking for extended periods
Because earthenware is fired at a lower temperature, it is more porous and sensitive to heat and moisture changes.
Thrown Stoneware Pottery
The clay I throw is stoneware, which is fired at a higher temperature for added strength and durability.
- Food safe
- Microwave safe
- Dishwasher safe, though hand washing is recommended to help preserve the glaze over time
- More durable than earthenware, but still handcrafted and should be handled with care
Important Temperature Notes:
- Avoid sudden temperature changes
- Stoneware can crack if heated too quickly
- If using in the oven, place the pottery in the oven before turning it on and allow it to preheat gradually with the oven
- Never move pottery directly from a cold environment into a hot oven
